1. Basavaraj Horatti resigns as Karnataka Legislative Council Chairperson

Karnataka Legislative Council Chairperson Basavaraj Horatti submitted his resignation from the post on August 7, making way for the Congress to have one of its own members to preside over the Upper House. Congress has named its senior leader Saleem Ahmed as the candidate for the position. He is expected to be officially anointed Chairperson on August 14. Till such time, Mr. Horatti would continue as pro-tem Speaker.

There had been several rounds of talks with Mr. Horatti on the issue, with Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar taking the lead in an effort to persuade him to resign of his own volition to avoid the embarrassment of a no-confidence motion. Congress now enjoys a majority in the 75-member Legislative Council. The monsoon session of the Karnataka legislature starts on August 13.

2. FIR against Hindu Janajagruti Samiti member for ‘false’ claim regarding Kunal Kamra show

Bengaluru police have booked Mohan Gowda of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti for allegedly spreading misinformation on social media in connection with the shifting of comedian Kunal Kamra’s show from Whitefield in east Bengaluru.

The FIR was filed after a police constable tasked with monitoring social media at the Whitefield police station found Mohan Gowda’s remarks, shared on social media platforms, to be misleading and fabricated.

The constable stated that Mohan Gowda had filmed a video on the premises of Whitefield police station claiming that the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti had demanded that Kunal Kamra’s show be stopped and that the inspector had assured action, which was false.

3. Health department forms 30 special teams to inspect hotels, restaurants, food outlets across Bengaluru

Following complaints received from public, videos posted on social media platforms and media reports, the Health and Family Welfare Department has formed 30 special teams to conduct inspections in hotels, restaurants, smaller food units and others. The teams comprise officials from Food Safety and Drug Administration.

According to the notification from the department, the inspection will be conducted in five-star hotels, road-side eateries, restaurants and other forms of food businesses. The inspection checklist is prescribed by the FSSAI for each establishment. Inspection officials will record video at required locations in each hotel/food establishment for further investigation purposes.

4. HAL airport becomes first in India to operationalise RNP CAT H helicopter approach

The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) airport in Bengaluru has become the first airport in India to operationalise the Required Navigation Performance – Category H (RNP CAT H) helicopter approach procedure. RNP CAT H helicopter approach procedure is a satellite-guided precision navigation system designed exclusively for helicopters.

Developed by the Airports Authority of India, validated through flight trials by HAL test pilots, this approach allows helicopters to fly highly accurate optimised paths, enabling all-weather access while safely navigating terrain and urban obstacles. The procedure reduces the approach time to HAL airport from 12 minutes to about four minutes.
