The Kerala government has extended the service tenure of coastal police wardens by one year until June 30, 2027.

In 2019, the then government had decided to appoint 177 coastal wardens on a contract basis across 18 coastal police stations in the State, to assist coastal police in lifesaving and rescue operations.

These wardens were drawn from the fishing community and they had played an indispensable role in rescuing people from accidents at sea and during other maritime emergencies.

Taking this into account, and based on a report from the IG (Coastal Security), the Home department has decided to extend the service of 141 coastal wardens, who are currently in service, for one more year, up to June 30, 2027. Their tenure had originally been set to end on June 30, 2026, a statement issued by the Home department said .
