Hyderabad’s sewerage system received a boost on Sunday with the inauguration of six sewerage treatment plants (STPs) by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The largest among them is the Amberpet STP, with a capacity of 212.5 million litres per day.

The other five include Attapur (64 MLD), Mullakatwa Cheruvu in Kukatpally (25 MLD), Shivalayanagar (14 MLD), Vennelagadda in Qutubullapur (10 MLD), and Palapitta in Serilingampally (7 MLD).

With this, the city now has 42 of the targeted 45 STPs, capable of treating 1,950 MLD of sewage in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. The remaining three plants, with a combined capacity of 113.5 MLD, are expected to be ready by next month.

Mr. Reddy also laid foundation stone for 39 new STPs under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 for urban local bodies around the Outer Ring Road. The aim is to treat 972 MLD sewage being produced there.

According to Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board’s master plan, sewage produced in 2021 was 1,950 MLD and it is estimated to increase to 2,800 by the year 2036. The 39 STPs at an outlay of ₹3,849.10 crore are slated to be completed by 2026, taking the overall capacity to 2,850 MLD capacity, and achieve the goal of treating 100% sewage.

To prevent sewage entering Musi, officials explained that a detailed project report to lay trunk lines at a cost of ₹4,700 crore was ready.

Minister for Backward Classes Ponnam Prabhakar, HMWS&SB managing director K. Ashok Reddy, local legislators and officials participated in the ceremony.
