Around half-a-dozen Haryana police personnel were injured and their vehicles damaged after an armed mob allegedly opened fire on the police team, pelted stones, and attacked them with sharp-edged weapons during a raid in Nuh on Saturday.

Thirteen people, including three women, have been arrested.

A case has been registered on charges of unlawful assembly, voluntarily causing hurt, grievous hurt to public servant and use of criminal force against public servant, among others, under the the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant sections of the Arms Act.

A pistol and five live cartridges have been seized from the spot, police said.

Vehicle theft

The attack took place when a joint Crime Branch team of Nuh Police, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid in Indana village within the limits of the Punhana police station in connection with the theft of vehicles from Punjab.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police, Punhana, Jitendra Rana, accused Azad, a former municipal councillor, opened fire on the police team with the intent to kill the police personnel when the team reached his house. He along with his accomplices later fled the scene.

“The men and women present inside the house attacked the police team, and soon a large crowd gathered outside. The villagers then began pelting stones at the police team. A few in the mob also opened fire in the air. Several police vehicles were pelted with stones and damaged. To bring the situation under control, additional forces were rushed to the spot,” said Mr. Rana.

Mr. Rana said the vehicles brought to Nuh from Punjab on rent were illegally sold off using fake documents and three FIRs were registered in this connection. He said the raids were conducted earlier as well in this connection and several vehicles were recovered, adding that around 250 vehicles were suspected to have been sold off using this modus operandi.

“The raid on Saturday was conducted following a tip-off that the prime accused Azad and his three accomplices were present in Indana village and a few vehicles could also be recovered,” said Mr. Rana.

The police officer said 16 people were named in the FIR and around 50 unidentified people were part of the mob that attacked the police. Three police teams were working jointly to arrest Azad and his accomplices, he added.
