According to the police, Tumakuru-based areca nut dealer Mohan’s driver Hemanth was supposed to deliver ₹1.01 crore cash to Mota Ram and his wife Lakshmi, in connection with a property deal on Saturday evening. Hemanth reached the designated spot in Akshay Nagar at 6 p.m. and called Mota Ram to hand over the cash. Mota Ram and his wife Lakshmi turned up and the cash exchange happened in their car.
Out of the blue, two men turned up claiming to be policemen and said they had to check the vehicle. They even took photographs of the three victims, attacked them, and tried to flee with the cash. However, the trio somehow managed to lock the car and sped away. However, the accused chased them in another car, waylaid them, and ensured they turned into a desolate spot. Soon, other accused joined. The three in the car were dragged out and held captive in a shed nearby.
The accused made Hemanth call his boss Mohan, asking him for a further ₹10 lakh ransom to release the three. Mohan, in turn, alerted the police. A team of Hulimavu police was conducting an area domination exercise in the vicinity at the time and rushed to the shed, based on technical evidence, rescued all three victims, and recovered the money, before arresting the eight accused.
Investigations are on as to how the accused were tipped off about the money exchange, the police said.
