In an initiative that sets an example of deep compassion and a sense of humanity, Lions Club of Secunderabad has come forward to give a dignified and respectful farewell to unclaimed bodies by arranging proper funeral rites.

This remarkable project is one of the key projects the 63-year-old Lions Club of Secunderabad is set to take up shortly. The inspiration came from a senior Lions Club member Vishal Vakaria, who used spend from his own funds to cremate unclaimed bodies.

Learning about his social service, Lions Club of Secunderabad president Aarthi Goyal at their regular monthly meetings decided that the Club itself will now take up the responsibility. “While Mr. Vakaria was doing the service on his own, we as members of the Club felt the need to join hands to cremate the unclaimed bodies. Government hospitals often receive bodies that remain unclaimed and unattended. We decided that these should get a dignified and respectful farewell through proper cremation,” Ms. Aarthi said while speaking at a felicitation programme to honour engineers, advocates, journalists and teachers on Saturday night.

Ms. Aarthi further said another significant initiative is the sanitary pads production unit in the city which is supported with generous contributions from the Club members.

The aim of this unit is to provide hygienic, biodegradable sanitary napkins free of cost in government schools, slum areas, and eventually rural regions, where menstrual hygiene awareness and access remain the most neglected. The unit has a capacity to produce 30,000 pads.

Lions Club of Secunderabad has been active for the last six decades running its Lions Eye Hospital, Dental Clinic, Physiotherapy & Magnetron Centre, Artificial Limb Centre, Old Age Home, and a Sanitary Pads Production Unit, making a tangible difference in countless lives. The club also actively supports members of the transgender community in achieving self-reliance.
