New curriculum for Classes IV-XII to include subjects on emerging technologies

Emerging technologies, prompt engineering, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) education are some of the subjects that will soon be integrated into the new curriculum for Classes IV-XII.

The curriculum design committee of the School Education Department held a meeting on Tuesday in Chennai to discuss and formulate the plan for the curriculum for Classes IV-XII. Last month, the department introduced the new syllabus for Classes I-III. Speaking at the meeting, School Education Minister Rajmohan said, “TNSPARK is being taught in government schools. Artificial intelligence (AI) has also advanced, and we will also teach prompt engineering to the students.”

Stating that there was a lot of push towards AI, Mr. Rajmohan said conventional teaching and learning was a must. “This is what the curriculum we formulate will also aim for. In this evolving AI world, we also need to cultivate natural intelligence in our students to ensure their growth,” he said. The Minister also added that arts would be given equal importance and STEAM education would take precedence.

At the meeting, the committee approved the development of a new curriculum, syllabus, and textbooks for Classes VI-VIII for implementation from the next academic year. “Appropriate integration of digital awareness and emerging technologies will ensure that learners are equipped to navigate the world with equal importance on ethics,” experts at the committee said.

After the implementation of the new curriculum for Classes IV-VIII, curriculum, syllabus, and textbook development for Classes IX-XII will be undertaken for implementation in 2027–28. The committee said its objective was to nurture confident, curious, and capable learners, who are academically strong, emotionally resilient, and socially responsible.
