The Kerala High Court Advocates Association (KHCAA) has pressed the dislike button on reels of lawyers, which are often “not keeping with the ethics and dignity of advocates.”
The lawyers’ body recently issued a circular to its members asking them to refrain from creating social media content in and around courts, which, according to its secretary, could invite legal action under the provisions of the Advocates Act.
The latest reel trending online shows a young lawyer in her sportswear working out in a gym and also in her professional attire in a courtroom. The reel had intermingled visuals of the lawyer in the gym and on the court premises. A complaint was filed against the Kottayam-based lawyer, who featured in the reel that was posted on her Instagram account.
Another reel started with a lady lawyer narrating her day in court and chatting with her friend in the corridor of the court, with visuals shot from the premises of the Kerala High Court.
The Association has received a complaint on such a reel, which was recorded on the court premises, said Nima Jacob, Secretary of KHCAA.
The Association will hold a primary inquiry into the alleged making of the reel by a lawyer and refer the matter to the Bar Council of Kerala and the Registry of the Kerala High Court, the two agencies that can initiate legal action in such cases, she said.
Such reels would start as an advocate narrating their day in court, often showing themselves in court attire, and then end up somewhere else, such as a restaurant or their home, pointed out Ms. Jacob.
The lawyer refused to comment on the controversy surrounding her reels.
Incidentally, the Bar Council of India had issued a comprehensive circular to address the “growing and disturbing” tendency among law professionals to record and film in court premises, spreading misinformation, scandalising comments made in court and circulating fake judgments or fabricated extracts of orders.
