A 45-year-old man from Theni was arrested after the police seized 12 kg of ganja from his tourist bag in a government bus during a vehicle check at a police check post in Christianpet village near Katpadi in Vellore on Saturday.

The police said the arrested person was identified as K. Suriya Prakash, a native of Uthamapalayam town in Theni. He was travelling in a government bus that was proceeding to Vellore from Chittoor (Andhra Pradesh).

After driving through Chittoor, the bus halted at the check post near Katpadi when a team of police personnel checked the vehicle and luggage of commuters. Prakash was found suspicious as he declined to give his bag for the check. When the police searched his bag, they found the contraband in it.

Initial inquiry revealed that Prakash procured ganja from agents in Chittoor to sell it among industrial workers in big towns and cities like Madurai, Dindigul, and Theni. A case was registered by Katpadi Police. He was lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is under way.
