New Delhi:

A lower number on the weighing scale doesn’t always mean you’re getting healthier. Fitness coach Mohita Mascarenhas, who runs the Instagram page keeping_it_narrow, has highlighted seven warning signs that could indicate your weight loss plan is backfiring.

She stressed that if your body is paying the price for weight loss, it may be time to reassess your approach.

7 warning signs your weight loss plan may be harming your health

1. You’re constantly thinking about food

If thoughts of food seem to occupy your mind all day, your diet may be too restrictive. Constantly thinking about what to eat next, craving food throughout the day or feeling obsessed with meals can all be signs that your body isn’t getting enough energy. While occasional cravings are normal, persistent food noise may indicate that your current plan is unsustainable.

2. Hair loss and dull, saggy skin

Physical changes often reveal what is happening internally. Excessive hair fall, dull skin and a loss of skin elasticity can occur when the body isn’t receiving the nutrients it needs to thrive. Restrictive diets may help you lose weight quickly, but they can also deprive your body of the vitamins, minerals and healthy fats needed to support healthy hair and skin.

3. Feeling tired, weak and drained

A successful fitness journey shouldn’t leave you feeling exhausted. If you find yourself lacking energy for workouts, struggling to concentrate at work or feeling drained during everyday activities, your calorie intake may be too low. Constant fatigue is often a sign that your body doesn’t have enough fuel to perform its basic functions efficiently.

4. Mood swings and irritability

Weight loss plans that are too extreme can affect more than just physical health. Mohita pointed out that irritability, mood swings and feeling unusually emotional may be linked to hunger and inadequate nutrition. When your body is under stress from a restrictive diet, it can affect your mood and make it harder to stick to healthy habits.

5. Severe constipation and acidity

Digestive health can also suffer when you’re trying to lose weight the wrong way. Mohita warned that consuming too few calories, not getting enough fibre and failing to stay hydrated can lead to constipation, acidity and other gut-related issues. Instead of improving your health, an unhealthy diet plan may end up disrupting your digestive system.

6. Irregular or missing periods

For women, changes in the menstrual cycle can be one of the clearest warning signs that something isn’t right. She described irregular or missed periods as a major red flag because they may indicate hormonal imbalance. If weight loss is interfering with your menstrual cycle, it may be time to reassess whether your body is getting the nutrition it needs.

7. Inconsistent sleep

Poor sleep can be another consequence of an unhealthy weight loss approach. Waking up repeatedly during the night, struggling to stay asleep or feeling just as tired in the morning as you did before bed can all point to inadequate nourishment. Quality sleep plays a crucial role in recovery, metabolism and overall well-being, making it an important indicator of whether your plan is truly supporting your health.

A lower number on the weighing scale isn’t always a sign of success. True progress should leave you feeling stronger, healthier and more energetic, not exhausted, irritable or unwell. If you’re experiencing any of these warning signs, it may be worth shifting your focus from rapid weight loss to long-term health and sustainability.
