Andhra Pradesh Industries and Commerce Minister T.G. Bharat Gupta performed the groundbreaking ceremony for a sewage treatment plant, meant to stop Kurnool’s sewage from entering the Tungabhadra river, in the presence of MP B. Nagaraju Panchalingala, on Monday (July 13, 2026).
The 35 MLD (million litres a day) plant would be built at a cost of ₹150 crore under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, and steps were being taken to complete it within 18 months, Mr. Bharat said.
Mr. Bharat said it was Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s resolve to ensure that sewage did not flow into rivers and that river waters were not polluted.
He recalled that during the previous Krishna Pushkarams, pilgrims visiting Kurnool had faced difficulties as sewage flowed directly into the river. The discharge had polluted the Tungabhadra and caused problems downstream. “The treatment plant would resolve this issue. The treated water, which will not be suitable for drinking, can be used for other purposes, such as industrial and agricultural needs, and would be made available at a very low cost,” he said.
The Minister said the Alliance government was working for the people’s welfare and development together. As part of this, it was implementing the ‘Super Six’ schemes and speeding up development, including road repairs and attracting industries to the State.
Speaking on the occasion, MP Bastipati Nagaraju said significant development had taken place in the State since the NDA government took office. He added that Mr. Bharat was making every effort to transform Kurnool into a “Smart City”.
Kurnool Urban Development Authority (KUDA) Chairperson Somisetty Venkateswarlu, Kurnool Municipal Commissioner Challa Obulesu and others took part in the event.
