Four contract workers were electrocuted and another sustained critical injuries while carrying out borewell drilling work at a private resort near Mamallapuram in Chengalpattu district on Saturday (July 11, 2026).

According to the police, five workers were engaged in installing a borewell at the premises of a private resort along the East Coast Road (ECR) near Mamallapuram. The victims were identified as Prabhu (33) of Neykuppi village, Balaji (20) of Vasanthapuri, Basha Bai of Mamallapuram, Rajendran (55) of Kadambadi village, and Bhagavan of Karanai.

During the drilling operation, an iron rod used for the borewell came into contact with an overhead high-voltage power line. All five workers suffered electric shock and were thrown to the ground.

Prabhu, Balaji, Basha Bai and Rajendran died on the spot, while Bhagavan survived with critical injuries and was admitted to hospital for treatment.

Mamallapuram police, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Arivazhagan, rushed to the scene, recovered the bodies and sent them to the Chengalpattu Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.

A case has been registered, and an investigation is under way to ascertain the circumstances leading to the accident.
