Four persons were arrested at Sundakkampalayam village near Chengam town in Tiruvannamalai after police seized around 500 kgs of gutka from two vehicles on Wednesday.

The arrested persons were identified as V. Dinesh Kumar, 35, R. Vijay Kumar, 45, B. Devasri, 30, and T. Mousbass, 35. They belong to Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Based on the orders of D. Uthayakumar, SP (Tiruvannamalai), a police team conducted a surprise check on the Cuddalore-Chittoor Highway near the town, when the team stopped two cars.

Police said that the four persons in the cars gave contradictory answers on the purpose of their visit and were unable to produce valid documents for the vehicles. Further inspection of their cars led to the seizure of a large quantity of gutka. The gang told police that the contraband was procured from Telangana to sell to retail dealers in Puduchery.

The cars were seized, and the arrested persons were lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. Further probe is under way.
