Nearly 20 reported technical faults and service disruptions have occurred across Bengaluru’s Namma Metro network since January 2024, with the Purple Line accounting for the highest number of incidents, according to Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya.

Raising concerns over the repeated breakdowns, Mr. Surya, in an X post on Thursday, said that the issue was no longer about isolated technical glitches but pointed to a pattern that raises serious questions about the safety and reliability of metro operations.

He stressed that the safety of passengers using Namma Metro must remain paramount and called for greater transparency and stronger oversight.

Mr. Surya said that he had consulted experts in metro safety and systems engineering before writing to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) with a set of recommendations aimed at improving operational safety. He also wrote to the Commissioner of Railway Safety (Southern Circle), urging the authority to take cognisance of the matter and initiate necessary measures to ensure that the BMRCL adheres to the highest standards of safety.

Mr. Surya’s statement comes after a major disruption on the Purple Line left thousands of commuters stranded across Bengaluru. On Tuesday evening, a technical fault in the underground section near the Cubbon Park Metro Station brought train services to a halt during peak hours, causing severe inconvenience to passengers and leading to overcrowding at several metro stations which the services were restored the next day.

A glitch was reported on Thursday evening as well.
