Burglars struck at a sub-temple on the premises of the historic Gnana Saraswati temple in Basar of Nirmal district late on Monday night and decamped with a silver crown and cash from the hundi.
According to the police, two masked miscreants gained entry into the Mahankali temple, located within the main temple complex, and broke open the iron grill gate around midnight on Monday. The burglars made off with a silver crown adorning the deity and the temple hundi.
After stealing the cash offerings, the duo abandoned the empty hundi near the temple complex before fleeing, sources added.
The burglary came to light when the priests arrived at the temple on Tuesday morning to perform the daily rituals.
Based on a complaint, the Basar police registered a case and launched an investigation.
Meanwhile, Nirmal Superintendent of Police G. Janaki Sharmila inspected the scene of the crime and examined the CCTV footage from the temple complex on Tuesday morning.
The SP constituted special teams to track down and apprehend the burglars.
