The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has designated Haldia seaport in West Bengal as an immigration post, a notification by the Ministry on Monday (June 22, 2026) said.

At present, there are 40 seaport immigration posts along India’s coastline and Haldia will be the 41st entry to the list.

Haldia Dock Complex, built in 1968 to take load off the Kolkata port, started international operations after a port was commissioned there in 1977.

MHA’s notification is likely aimed at boosting maritime trade and movement of tourists from the eastern seaport. The move comes days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power for the first time in West Bengal.

Earlier on May 29, three seaports in Gujarat- Dahej, Sikka and Tuna Tekra were designated as immigration posts.
