Ammonia leak: Committee to inspect hazardous industries in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Labour Minister J. Mohamed Farvas on Monday (June 22, 2026) said the government would immediately constitute a committee to inspect hazardous industries across the State and avoid accidents.

Making a suo motu statement in the Legislative Assembly on the death of five women workers following the ammonia gas leak tragedy at St. Peter and Paul Sea Food Exports Private Ltd. in Kannigaipair near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district, he said Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had already issued orders for the formation of the committee.

“We are taking steps to constitute the committee immediately,” he said.

The Minister said the government would obtain reports from the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health, the Public Health Department, and the Member Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board within 24 hours.

“The Chief Minister has directed us to complete a detailed inquiry within three days,” he said.

The Chief Minister has announced ₹2 lakh each to the families of the five women who lost their lives in the accident. The government will also bear the expenses of transporting the bodies to their native States and ensure the immediate release of provident fund (PF) and Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) benefits to the families, he added.
