Two killed, six others injured in fire at restaurant in Mysuru

Two persons were killed and six others sustained injuries after a fire broke out at a restaurant in Dattagalli on the Outer Ring Road in Mysuru on Monday.

The blaze erupted in the rooftop terrace garden of a two-storey building near Netaji Circle in Kuvempunagar Police station limits that appeared to house a kitchen area as well as a dining area.

An official from the Fire and Emergency Services Department said the department received an alert around 3.15 p.m. and immediately dispatched fire tenders to the spot.

Several customers who were trapped in the rooftop dining area were rescued by the Fire and Emergency Services personnel using ladders.

“We rescued around 15 customers with the help of ladders and shifted them to hospital Later, during a search, we found two staff members dead,” the official said.

Most of the injured suffered minor burn injuries, according to officials.

A statement from the City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar said that a preliminary inquiry reveals that a short circuit occurred in the electric bulbs /LED installed for decoration at the restaurant – Maara. Apparently, fire spread rapidly to nearby decorative material the statement said while pointing out that further investigation on the cause of accident is underway.

The deceased have been identified as Sahin, 26, the main cook at the restobar, hailing from Manipur, and Prakash, an employee from Nepal. Both of them succumbed to burn injuries, the police said.

The injured persons inlcude Sona, 25, from Mandya, Ramesh, 25, from Bengaluru, both customers, besides Mahadev Prasad and Avinash, 22, both managers at Maara restaurant, and Prajwal, 26, and Yoga, 24, both employees at the restaurant. The condition of the injured, who where shifted to the hospital for medical treatment, is described as “stable”.

The officials from the Fire and Emergency Services said the presence of highly inflammable materials in the restaurant contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.

The fire tenders from the Saraswathipuram and Hebbal fire stations brought the blaze under control and prevented it from spreading further.

Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Sundar Raj visited the spot and reviewed the situation.

Former Minister G.T. Deve Gowda, who represents the Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency where the restobar is located, visited the spot. He said both the deceased were believed to be natives of other States and that officials had been instructed to inform their families.

Mr. Deve Gowda also said he would take up the issue of compensation for the next of kin of the deceased with Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
