Burglars decamped with 50 sovereigns of gold jewellery, one kilogram of silver articles and ₹10,000 cash from the house of a farmer in Kariyamangalam village near Chengam town in Tiruvannamalai on Thursday.

The police said K. Ramesh, 39, his wife R. Devi, 34, and children lived in the village. Initial inquiry revealed that the family went to attend a temple festival in Mel Pennathur village near Tiruvannamalai town a few days ago.

The police said that on their return, the couple noticed damage to the main door of the house. The couple checked the cupboard and found the valuables missing. On being informed, Chengam police reached the spot with forensic experts. Fingerprints were taken. The police have taken CCTV camera footage along the route where the house is located. The Superintendent of Police (SP) M. Sudhakar, has formed special teams to nab the culprits. A case has been registered. A probe is under way.
