J&K CM Abdullah seeks return of Statehood at Delhi meeting with PM

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah raised the issue of Statehood with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a meeting in Delhi on Thursday (June 11, 2026).

The National Conference (NC), which is in power in J&K, plans to hold a protest in Delhi on the first day of the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament to press for the restoration of Statehood for J&K.

Mr. Abdullah, in a post on X, said he called on PM Modi in Delhi “to discuss issues of importance to J&K, including the early return of Statehood, the state of the economy, pace of development, and promotion of tourism.”

The J&K CM also congratulated the PM for completing 12 uninterrupted years in office. An official spokesman said the J&K Chief Minister also highlighted the need for continued support from the Government of India “to accelerate economic growth, strengthen connectivity, generate employment, expand infrastructure and enhance public welfare across Jammu & Kashmir”. 

Constitutional struggle

Earlier in the day, NC president Farooq Abdullah, while speaking in Srinagar, said the party’s constitutional struggle for the restoration of Statehood and rights will continue.

He said all J&K’s political parties were united on this demand. On the upcoming protest in Delhi, Mr. Abdullah said, “The NC does not intend to invite any party. We are going (to Delhi). Those who want to join can come. Unity on the issue of Statehood is the need of the hour.”

He said the J&K Lieutenant Governor, who is a nominee from Delhi, has most of the powers, which the elected government should have.

Mr. Abdullah said the political situation in J&K “would remain unstable until the commitments made at the time of the region’s Accession to India were honoured”.

“J&K joined India on certain conditions. Those conditions should be reviewed and honour must be restored,” Mr. Abdullah said.
