Health Minister K. Muraleedharan has promised steps to improve the functioning of the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) and the Government General Hospital, Kozhikode, by strengthening their infrastructure and creating new posts.

This followed his visits to both hospitals on Wednesday (June 10, 2026). One of the major proposals is the creation of a Department of Reproductive Medicine at the MCH to give a fillip to fertility treatment. Mr. Muraleedharan said that more posts of nursing officer would be created at the superspeciality block of the medical college hospital. A new post of senior resident doctor would be created in the radiotherapy section. The Interventional Radiology department would either get a new faculty member or a new head of the department.

The Department of Orthopaedics would get an additional post of assistant professor. The intensive care unit for children would be shifted to another floor with more facilities. The operation theatre for cochlear implant surgery would be renovated. A heart lung machine would be purchased for cardiac surgeries.

Earlier, the doctors said that the government owed hundreds of crores of rupees to the hospitals in lieu of the treatment provided to patients under its various insurance schemes. Because of this, the institution was facing a fund shortage and finding it difficult to pay back to distributors of various medical equipment. Along with this, they also highlighted the lack of creation of new posts of medical staff.

Mr. Muraleedharan said that the local development funds of the MLAs from the district would be used for purchasing ventilators for various departments. He directed the authorities to plug the water leakage in the old casualty building and solve the drinking water shortage at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Mr. Muraleedharan said that the general hospital at the Kozhikode beach too would get a facelift. At a meeting with the hospital authorities, he took stock of the steps needed for infrastructure development, deployment of doctors, nurses and other staff, and existing status of equipment. The Minister pointed out that strengthening the beach hospital was necessary to reduce the rush to the medical college hospital. The facilities would be developed on par with the Government General Hospital, Ernakulam.
