The Additional Director-General of Police (Anti-Narcotic Task Force) has ordered the detention of a 58-year-old habitual ganja peddler under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act and his confinement in the Central Prison in Shivamogga.
The accused, Ramesh V. Kale, a resident of Bapu Nagar in Kalaburagi, has a long criminal history involving narcotics-related offences.
As many as 17 cases have been registered against him under various provisions of the NDPS Act for being in possession, transportation, supply and sale of narcotic substances.
In 2022, the authorities concerned ordered his externment to the Bhagamandala Police limits in Kodagu.
However, while appearing before courts in connection with pending cases, he resumed sale of ganja leading to two cases being registered against him following police raids.
In connection with a case registered at Brahmapur Police Station, Kale executed a bond undertaking for a period of one year to maintain good conduct and refrain from activities that can disturb law and order. However, in a subsequent case registered on January 27, 2024, he was found to have violated the conditions of the bond and was fined ₹25,000.
The police said that Kale’s continued involvement in the storage and sale of prohibited narcotic substances posed a serious threat to public health, social well-being and the future of young people.
Based on a report submitted by Brahmapur Police Inspector Mahantesh Patil and the recommendation of Police Commissioner S.D. Sharanappa, the Additional Director-General of Police (Anti-Narcotic Task Force) issued orders for Kale’s preventive detention under the PIT-NDPS Act and his incarceration in the Shivamogga Central Prison.
