Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has announced that a programme to plant 15 lakh saplings would be launched in the city on June 27 to mark the birth anniversary of Bengaluru founder Kempe Gowda.

Speaking to mediapersons after planting a sapling on the premises of the Vidhana Soudha on June 5 to mark World Environment Day, Mr. Shivakumar said the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) would implement the programme.

Highlighting the importance of increasing the green cover, he said every one should try to plant at least one sapling a year.

He said Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, who was in Bengaluru on Friday (June 5), too had planted a sapling on the Kempe Gowda International Airport premises.
