Tension gripped Government General Hospital in Mahabubabad on the night of September 21 after a mob allegedly attacked doctors and the hospital superintendent following the death of a patient.
The woman, identified as Shaheda Begum, was admitted to the hospital around 8.30 p.m. on September 21. According to hospital officials, she was suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis, had a critically high blood sugar level of 700 mg/dl, altered sensorium, and severe respiratory distress with oxygen saturation at 60%. “Despite providing the required treatment, she suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away at 10 p.m. Doctors attempted resuscitation but could not revive her,” said hospital superintendent B. Srinivasa Rao.
Following her death, about 50 to 60 people stormed into the hospital’s ICU, blaming the doctors for the death and allegedly assaulted them. The unrest quickly spread, with the mob barging into the superintendent’s chamber and attacking Dr. Srinivasa Rao. The superintendent developed palpitations and sweating during the assault, after which he was shifted to the ICU.
Police personnel posted at the hospital outpost attempted to bring the situation under control and later called for additional forces to disperse the crowd. The hospital administration has lodged a complaint with the Mahabubabad Town police station.
Meanwhile, several medical associations, including the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Telangana, Telangana Teaching Government Doctors Association (TTGDA), and Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA), condemned the attack. They have urged authorities to initiate strict legal action against those responsible and ensure the safety of medical professionals.
