Siddaramaiah, Kharge loyalists fielded in MLC elections

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has fielded incumbent MLCs B.K. Hariprasad and Tippannappa Kamaknoor, AICC secretary P.V. Mohan, and party worker B.S. Shivanna (popularly known as Shivanna Malavalli) as its candidates for the Legislative Council elections to be held on June 18 from the Legislative Assembly electoral college.

Polling will be held for seven vacant seats, and the ruling Congress is expected to win four of them. AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge cleared the names of the four candidates, according to a party release.

Mr. Shivanna, a loyalist of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, is popularly known among college students as the “Laptop Anna” for his efforts to bridge the digital divide by distributing over 500 laptops for free to students from poor and marginalised backgrounds. He belongs to the Kuruba community.

Mr. Kamaknor is a loyalist of Mr. Kharge and hails from Kalaburagi district. He belongs to the Koli community.

Mr. Mohan and Mr. Hariprasad belong to the Billava (Idiga) community.

The BJP and the JD(S) are yet to announce their candidates. The Opposition is expected to secure three seats.
