The Race Course police recorded formal the arrests of four convicts on charge of attacking K. Karthi (35), the main accused in the sexual assault-cum-murder of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur, during a scuffle at the Coimbatore Central Prison on Saturday, May 30 2026.

The Race Course said the four persons were booked for assault based on a complaint lodged by a prison officer. Since they were undergoing conviction in the prison, the police recorded their formal arrests in the prison by following the due procedures with the jurisdictional magistrate, said Race Course Inspector G. Jeyachandran.

Police sources said the incident took place at the hospital on the prison campus. Karthi was at the hospital as he was yet to recover from the fractures on the right leg and the right arm, which he suffered while allegedly attempting to escape from the police on May 22.

They added the four convicts assaulted him with their hands and objects such as pen, spoon and plate. Prison staff immediately intervened and rescued him and shifted to the prisoner’s ward at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where had undergone treatment after the arrest, till May 28.

Five prisoners shifted

The four prisoners arrested in the assault and another prisoner were shifted to prisons in Chennai, Vellore, Salem, Tiruchi and Cuddalore. Prison sources said a detailed investigation on the incident was being held under prison Superintendent Senthil Kumar. Prison sources claimed the injures Karthi suffered in the assault were not grievous.
