A young woman was injured in a freak accident when an iron piece from the worksite of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) on Civil Lane Road broke the windshield of her vehicle.

The accident, which took place near Padivattom on Tuesday night (May 19), became known when the injured took to social media and reportedly demanded compensation for the injury and loss that she sustained.

Responding to the development, KMRL confirmed that the accident took place when an iron piece fell on her car, causing the injury. The incident occurred during the de-shuttering work of the deck slab, it said in a statement.

Afcons Infrastructure, the contractor, was asked to immediately suspend works until further notice. The firm was also directed to extend all necessary support and compensation to the affected person. An inquiry into the incident will be conducted, and steps will be taken to further strengthen the existing safety mechanisms.

The works will be resumed only after diverting road traffic and ensuring all necessary additional safety measures are fully implemented, the statement said.
