Blood banks told to maintain reserves, organise donation camps

District AIDS Control Officer(DACO) G. Radhika on Friday directed officials to ensure adequate blood stocks in all blood banks across Annamayya district and prevent shortages during emergencies.

During an inspection of a blood bank run by a charitable organisation here, Dr. Radhika, along with Cluster Programme Manager Bhaskar Vempalli, reviewed blood storage facilities, maintenance procedures and records.

She instructed the organisers to maintain sufficient reserves and strengthen monitoring mechanisms to ensure uninterrupted availability of blood. Stressing that blood donation was equivalent to saving lives, Dr. Radhika appealed to youth to voluntarily participate in blood donation drives and spread awareness among the public.

The DACO said each blood bank should organise at least 26 blood donation camps every month. She added that private blood banks must supply 30% of the blood collected to government blood banks. Dr. Radhika also warned that the illegal sale of blood in hospitals was a punishable offence and that strict action would be taken against violators.
