In Tamil Nadu’s political theatre, the arrival of a new political party in the electoral contest has served as both a launchpad for historic realignments as well as a graveyard for grand ambitions. With the high profile debut of actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in the 2026 Assembly elections, expectations are high about whether his party could breach the Dravidian duopoly or merely dent its margins.
A cursory look at the history of electoral debuts of select political parties in Assembly elections held in the past in the State offers both a roadmap and a warning. For this analysis only the general elections to the Assembly was taken into consideration and not the byelection or Lok Sabha polls.
