The State government should provide a fixed sum of a minimum of ₹1 crore for any academic chair to be established in universities, a committee headed by writer Baraguru Ramachandrappa has recommended.

“The government provides an amount for the establishment of chairs in universities. The chairs have to conduct programmes with the interest earned from the amount. When we look at the current status of the chairs, we find that each has a different fixed amount. While some chairs have a capital of ₹5 lakh, others have been given a capital of up to ₹5 crore. There is no uniformity in the amount of capital given to chairs, and this disparity should be eliminated,” the committee proposed.
