Two women’s quest for justice for their daughters fuels Bengal poll fight

Two mothers from different corners of West Bengal and from contrasting social backgrounds are contesting the Assembly elections with one aim: to bring justice for their daughters, who were killed in separate, gruesome incidents in the State.  

Ratna Debnath, from the Panihati Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas, has emerged as a key face of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s campaign. For Ms. Debnath, whose daughter—a doctor—was raped and murdered at Kolkata‘s R. G. Kar Hospital and Medical College in August 2024, the election is a personal quest for justice for her daughter.
