Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi on Sunday began his three-day visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for the Congress convention in Port Blair, following which the Congress leader is scheduled to visit Great Nicobar Island (GNI) as well, where the Union government is planning a ₹92,000-crore mega infrastructure project amid tribal communities’ concerns that they will be displaced and lose their rights over the forests there.

The Congress in-charge of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Manickam Tagore, on Sunday (April 26, 2026) said Mr. Gandhi assured the people in Port Blair that he would “continue to fight for justice, development, and rights of the people of Andaman and Nicobar in Delhi”. While noting that the LoP also intended to visit Great Nicobar, Mr. Tagore said they were “awaiting permission from the administration” for this trip.
