Minister for Backward Classes’ Welfare S. Savitha on Wednesday (September 17) announced that the BC Protection Act, promised during elections to safeguard the dignity and self-respect of backward communities, will soon take its final form. Measures are being taken to implement 34% reservations for BCs in local bodies, according to a press statement.

A key meeting was held on Wednesday at the Secretariat in Amaravati under Minister Savitha’s leadership, attended by BC Ministers, Minister for Home Anita and Minister for Law N. Md. Farooq.

Ms. Savitha told reporters that since the formation of the TDP-led government, efforts have been made to advance the welfare of BCs. She highlighted that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, inspired by N.T. Rama Rao, is working to ensure BCs are given prominence across all sectors.

Ms. Savitha added that over ₹47,000 crore has been allocated in the 2025-26 budget—the highest in history—for BC welfare. She emphasised that the BC Protection Act is being formulated in line with election promises and that steps are underway to ensure 34% reservation for BCs in local body elections. “The coalition government’s goal is to enable BCs to live with dignity and self-respect,” she said.

Minister Kollu Ravindra criticised the previous government, saying BC leaders faced severe hardships, including false cases and illegal imprisonment. He affirmed that the BC Protection Act aims to ensure a respectful life for the community. Ministers Atchannaidu, Anagani Satya Prasad, Kondapalli Srinivas, and Vasamsetti Subhash were also present.
