Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith was taken into custody by the Thodupuzha police on Tuesday in connection with a case of sexual abuse registered over a complaint filed by a female actor. The former chairman of the Kerala State Chalachithra Academy was taken into custody from Thodupuzha reportedly after intercepting his vehicle.

The alleged incident had happened within the Kochi city police limits. The police had been tracking the movement of the filmmaker after recording the statement of the complainant recently.

Police sources said the procedures to hand over Mr. Ranjith to the Kochi city police were on.

Two cases of sexual assault were registered against Mr. Ranjith in 2024 following allegations against him in the wake of the release of the Justice Hema Committee report. However, the Kerala High Court in October 2025 had quashed one of the cases .
