Acting on Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre’s directive for the relocation of 63-year-old elephant Gajendra from the Budipadaga elephant camp in Chamarajanagar district to the Mattigodu camp in the Nagarahole forests, the forest authorities safely shifted the elephant in a truck to the location.

In isolation

Gajendra, a veteran of the famous Mysuru Dasara festivities, had recently been living in isolation at the Budipadaga camp, raising concerns among wildlife enthusiasts and the public.

A social media campaign was launched for Gajendra, with citizens urging the forest authorities to shift the jumbo to a safer and comfortable environment. Several representations were made to the Forest Minister in this regard.

“Elephants are sensitive and social animals that thrive in herds, and it was reported that prolonged isolation had left Gajendra weakened. There were also fears that if released for grazing in forest areas, he would be unable to defend himself against wild elephants,” the Minister said.

Mr. Khandre, responding to the public sentiment, issued a written directive on March 26, instructing officials to take immediate action in accordance with established procedures.

On Tuesday, after a customary (ritual offering) at the Budipadaga camp, Gajendra was transported in a specially equipped vehicle to the Mattigodu camp.

The move has been welcomed, with citizens and elephant lovers expressing gratitude to the Minister on social media for responding to their concerns and timely intervention in the animal’s welfare.
