A private medical college in Devanahalli, Bengaluru, has been fined ₹1 Crore by the National Medical Commission (NMC) over non-disclosure of and the payment of stipends to MBBS interns and postgraduate residents.

A total of seven private medical colleges have been fined by the NMC for the same reason. Akash Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Devanahalli, is the only college from the State to be fined. The remaining six colleges are in Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana.

Following Supreme Court orders in multiple cases, the NMC had, on July 11, 2025, issued a public notice directing all medical colleges and institutions across the country to disclose on their official websites the stipend being paid to MBBS interns and postgraduate medical residents, as mandated under the applicable regulations, and to ensure transparency and uniformity in the payment of stipend.

However, these seven colleges, which the NMC has now imposed a penalty on, have not followed these directions despite repeated reminders, sources said. “The non-compliance with the above-mentioned requirements attracts regulatory actions under Clause 30 and 31 of the establishment of Medical Institutions, Assessment and Rating Regulations, 2023 and Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER), 2023, and the Maintenance of Standards of Medical Education Regulations, 2023,” the NMC notice said.

Further, it stated that the continuing non-compliance with the mandate regarding payment of stipend and disclosure of the same on the institutions’ websites shall attract further regulatory and penal actions, including but not limited to restrictions on admissions. “Suspension of permissions, or other disciplinary measures will be taken,” it warned.
