The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Christian Medical College, Vellore, distributed prizes for various competitions, including music and dance competitions, to school students to mark World Diabetes Day on Saturday.

According to a press release, the theme for this year, ‘Diabetes and the Brain’, underscores the growing recognition of the intricate relationship between diabetes and brain health.

While diabetes is widely known for its complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, and peripheral nerves, its impact on cognitive function and mental well-being remains comparatively less recognized. Persistent hyperglycemia can adversely affect cerebral vasculature, thereby increasing the risk of stroke, vascular dementia, cognitive decline, depression, and anxiety.

Through this theme, the department aims to highlight the importance of early detection, optimal glycemic control, lifestyle modification, and psychological well-being in preventing long-term neurological complications.

Dr. Biju George, Director, Christian Medical College, Vellore, was the chief guest. As part of the awareness campaign, a series of competitions were organized for one year to actively engage students, teachers, and healthcare professionals in meaningful dialogue and creative expression.

Some of the competitions include cookery, nursing and medical quiz, poster and painting competition and theme-based dance contest. Winners for various competitions received their prizes.
