As per Kerala State Electricity Board projections, average daily consumption in March is likely to touch 103.5 mu.

As per Kerala State Electricity Board projections, average daily consumption in March is likely to touch 103.5 mu.

Daily electricity consumption in Kerala crossed the 100 million unit (mu) mark for the first time this summer on Saturday (March 7), an indication of the soaring temperatures in the State.

Power consumption data for the State showed a consumption of 100.4 mu on Saturday, which is the highest so far in 2026. Except on March 1, the State has steadily recorded a daily consumption above the 90 mu mark. On March 6, consumption had stood at 99.64 mu.

Meanwhile, Kerala is banking heavily on electricity ‘imports’ to meet the summer demand. For instance, of the 100.4 mu consumed on Saturday, 71.64 mu had come through imports from outside the State. Internal generation—all sources combined—accounted for 28.72 mu. Of this, hydropower contributed the major chunk—26.76 mu.

As per Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) projections, the average daily consumption in March is likely to touch 103.5 mu. It could go up to 111.7 mu in April, when the summer peaks in Kerala. In 2025, summer-time consumption had crossed the 100 mu mark for the first time on March 4, show power sector data.

Storage

Combined storage in the hydel reservoirs managed by the KSEB, as on March 8, stands at 53% (equivalent to 2,182.20 mu). Kerala had recorded its highest daily consumption of 115.94 mu on May 3, 2024. The highest peak demand of 5,797 megawatts (MW) was recorded on May 2, 2024.
