CPI likely to relax two-term norm for sitting MLAs

The Communist Party of India (CPI)’s State council met on Sunday to finalise the candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections. Speculation is rife that the two-term limitations for sitting MLAs will be relaxed in some cases based on recommendations from the district councils.

A handful of MLAs who have completed their third term are likely to make way for fresh candidates, although exceptions will be made in some cases if the district councils insist.

Among the sitting MLAs, Ministers including Revenue Minister K. Rajan, Food and Civil Supplies Minister G.R. Anil and Agriculture Minister P. Prasad are likely to figure on the list of candidates. Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener T.P. Ramakrishnan had said last week that the official declaration of the front’s candidates will be made only after the declaration of the election dates.
