Tension prevailed at Thaloor, along the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border, in The Nilgiris district on Friday after the Kerala government was accused of placing a ‘Welcome to Kerala’ signboard.
An official said residents and political outfits raised objections after officials of Kerala’s Public Works Department placed the board at Thaloor on the evening of Thursday (March 5, 2026).
Police presence was stepped up on both sides of the border and talks were under way. Residents said that despite their objections, the Kerala officials had installed the board on the Tamil Nadu border.
The official said Both States had been disputing the land since 2017.
Nilgiris Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Taneeru told reporters that she had asked the Wayanad Collector to maintain status quo until the Department of Survey of both States issued directions.
She said she was informed that the signboard would be removed till the surveys were undertaken. “We have asked them [Kerala] to remove it. If they do not do so, we will initiate further action,” Ms. Taneeru said.
