Four lives were saved after organs were retrieved from 19-year-old Jasliya Johnson, who had been declared brain dead. After the confirmation of brain death on Tuesday (February 3), relatives expressed their willingness to donate her organs, according to a communication. The organ donation procedures were coordinated through Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO).

Jasliya’s liver was donated to a patient undergoing treatment at Rajagiri Hospital, her kidneys were given to Kottayam Medical College, and her corneas to the Angamaly Eye Bank Association of Kerala.

A native of Edavanakkad, Vypeen, Ernakulam, Ms. Johnson was a second-year B.Com student at Morning Star College, Angamaly. Jasliya, who worked part-time alongside her studies, met with an accident at TELK Junction in Angamaly on February 28 while returning from work. She was taken to a private hospital in Angamaly and later shifted to Rajagiri Hospital for specialised treatment.

Awareness programme

In a bid to give fillip to the organ donation efforts, the Women Sub Committee of All India Lawyers Union organised an organ donation awareness programme here the other day. Close to 20 lawyers expressed their willingness to donate their organs at the event.

“We have collected their names and details and the organ donor pledges will be registered in the coming days. The idea was to encourage more people to donate their organs,” said T.P. Ramesh, Ernakulam district president of the union.

The awareness drive was organised as part of their week-long International Women’s Day celebrations. The classes were led by Dr. Joe Joseph and Navya Mary Simon. The meeting was inaugurated by Principal Sub Judge Rehna Rajeevan. Women Advocates Committee chairperson Sindhu B.R., convener Suja T., and Maya Krishnan spoke.
