Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (February 28, 2026) inaugurated Micron Technology Inc.’s Assembly, Test, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat.

IT Secretary S. Krishnan had said during the recently concluded AI Impact Summit that the facility would start putting out chips by the end of February. The facility has enjoyed 50% capital support from the Union government’s India Semiconductor Mission, amounting to ₹22,516 crore. This was further supplemented by a 20% capital support by the Gujarat government.

A proud day for India!

An ATMP facility packages semiconductors after they have been fabricated elsewhere. The facility in Sanand will focus on data storage chips, converting “advanced DRAM and NAND wafers from Micron’s global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products,” Micron said in a statement.

“Micron’s DRAM and NAND solutions power data centres, AI applications, mobile devices, and advanced computing systems around the world,” Mr. Modi said at the inauguration. “Now they will be built right here, on this land of Sanand. Here, advanced wafers will be converted into high quality memory and storage products. Hundreds of people have been employed in this plant. It will expand further in the coming time,” he added.

Micron said it expected to package “tens of millions” of chips this year, and “hundreds of millions” next year. The “growing global demand for memory and storage fueled by AI” would ensure that the production scales healthily, it said.

Late in 2025, Micron shifted away from the consumer memory market altogether to focus its energies on the AI industry’s demand for memory chips, the prices of which have soared. Assuming that the demand for these chips holds, it’s practically guaranteed that Micron will be able to get a return on its investment into the facility at Sanand, especially with the capital support it received.

“Micron built and is operating the assembly and test facility in accordance with the company’s sustainability goals, rigorous health and safety standards, and with local and global environmental commitments,” Micron said in a statement. “The facility is designed to meet or exceed Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standards. Additionally, the facility uses advanced water-saving technologies to enable zero liquid discharge,” the company said.
