The State government has approved and ordered the opening of 31 new Girls Pre University (PU) colleges for minority community students.

These colleges will come up in each of the 31 districts of the State on properties belonging to the Karnataka State Board of Auqaf and will be funded by the Board as well. The Board will manage these colleges through the Directorate of Minorities.

Jeelani Mokashi, Director of the Directorate of Minorities, said, “As per the Chief Minister’s Budget announcement, permission has been granted for the opening of 31 girls’ colleges across the State, with enrolment set to begin in the 2026-27 academic year. These colleges will be built with the assistance of the Karnataka State Board of Auqaf and will be located on the Board’s property. Additionally, all minority community students will be given admission to these colleges”.

The government approved the construction of girls’ PU colleges on Waqf Board sites in 15 districts on September 13, 2024, at an estimated cost of ₹3.18 crore per college, funded by the interest amount of ₹47.76 crore deposited in various bank accounts of the Karnataka State Board of Auqaf. However, the project was not implemented.

In addition, the government has given administrative approval to the project announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the 2025-26 Budget to build 16 Girls PU colleges at a cost of ₹6 crore for each college on waqf sites in 16 districts of the state.

However, it has been advised to delay the opening of the colleges until the construction work on the college buildings is completed. If the buildings on the waqf property in the districts are available, they should be used; if not, temporary rental arrangements should be made for other buildings, the government has directed the Department.

These colleges will have Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology (PCMB) combination in the Science stream, Computer Science, Economics, Business Studies, Accountancy (CEBA) in the Commerce stream and History, Economics, Political Science, Sociology (HEPS) in the Arts stream. Each stream will have a strength of 60 students per year, adding up to a total of 360 students per college.

The State government has sanctioned a total of 589 posts for teaching and non-teaching staff at these colleges. A total of 19 posts have been approved for each college, including one principal, 15 lecturers, one second divisional assistant, and two D-group posts.
