At least two people were killed and more than 10 injured when an speeding truck ran over several people in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore on Monday (September 15, 2025), officers said, adding that the vehicle also caught fire after the accident.

According to the police, the accident took place around 7.45 p.m. when the speeding truck hit several pedestrians and at least five vehicles at the aerodrome road in Shikshak Nagar area under Malharganj police station.

Malharganj Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vivek Singh Chouhan told The Hindu that two deaths have been confirmed so far, while at least 10 people have been injured in the incident.

Krishna Lalchandani, Indore Zone 1 Deputy Commissioner of Police, said that after the medical examination, the driver was found heavily drunk. “He is not even in a state to talk at the moment. We will interrogate him once he is in his senses,” Mr. Lalchandani said, speaking to The Hindu.

The DCP added that the vehicle was carrying packing cartons. “Nine people are currently hospitalised of whom three are still serious,” he said.

He pointed out that one of the two deceased was caught in one of the tyres of the truck and dragged for a distance. A purported CCTV footage of the truck crashing into vehicles from behind at a traffic signal has also surfaced on social media.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the incident while issuing directions to ensure that primary reasons be inquired before heavy vehicles are allowed to enter the city before 11 p.m.

“The truck accident that occurred in Indore today is tragic. After obtaining detailed information about the incident, I have directed the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) to go to Indore for inspection. Additionally, I have also directed that a preliminary factual inquiry be conducted into the reasons for the entry of heavy vehicles into the city before 11 PM at night. I express my condolences to the deceased and pray to God for the swift recovery of the injured,” Mr. Yadav said on X.

“The truck driver was running off after hitting someone near Kalani Nagar and caused the accident,” Mr. Chouhan said, adding that the truck hit people for over 300 metres before catching fire.

A video of the vehicle engulfed in massive fire on a busy road of the city also surfaced on the internet, with multiple fire tenders trying to douse the blaze.

The ACP said the truck driver has been detained. “We are proceeding with the legal action and a case will be filed under relevant provisions,” he said.

Mr. Chouhan said the truck also hit over five vehicles, including some e-rickshaws, and dragged some of them.
