Leaders of CPI (M), CPI and CPI-ML New Democracry urged Union Minister K. Rammohan Naidu on Monday to cancel the proposed cargo airport near Mulapeta seaport in Uddanam region of Srikakulam district. They cited concerns over land acquisition and environmental impact.

The parties along with Cargo Vyatireka Porata Samithi leaders held a rally and public meeting in Bahadapalli of Mandasa mandal, to garner support of the people to the oppose the project.

The leaders alleged that the airport would only benefit the corporate sector while destroying hundreds of acres of coconut and cashew plantations and paddy fields.

CPI-M Srikakulam District secretary D. Govinda Rao suggest that if the government was keen on building a cargo airport, they should consider the upcoming Bhogapuram international airport in Vizianagaram district as a more suitable location.

CPI-ML New Democracy District secretary Tandra Prakash said that around 3,000 acres of private lands would be acquired for the construction of the cargo airport. He asked the Minister to use his influence and secure more funds for the completion of Vamsadhara-phase-2 and other irrigation projects.

CPI Srikakulam District secretary Chapara Venkata Ramana was also present.
