A wild elephant trampled a woman agricultural labourer to death at Hunasehalli near Pura in Chikkamagaluru taluk on Sunday (February 22) morning. This is the second death due to an elephant attack in the village within a week.

The deceased has been identified as Boramma, 33, a native of Kudligi taluk in Ballari district. On February 16, another person who hailed from Haveri district, was killed by an elephant.

Following the first death, local people had staged protests at Balehonnur and demanded that the Forest Department capture the wild elephants roaming in the area. The officers had assured the protesters that they would drive back the elephants to the forests.

However, within six days, one more person has died in the same location. Locals are gathering at Kadabagere in N.R. Pura taluk to stage a protest, keeping the dead body.

Elephant captured

Meanwile, the Forest Department staff sedated a tusker said to be responsible for the two deaths, near Beranagodu in Chikkamagaluru taluk.

The department staff had been in the field for the last four days as part of the operation to capture the elephant. They succeeded within hours of attack at Hunasehalli.

The field staff spotted the animal near Beranagodu and sedated it firing the tranquilizer dart. The staff are engaged in the efforts to capture it with the help of tamed elephants.
