Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud said that the Congress has no political alternative in Telangana, citing the party’s strong grassroots presence and its recent performance in local body elections.

In an informal chat with reporters at Gandhi Bhavan, he said the Congress’s organisational strength at the field level had been decisively proven, with the party winning 67% of BC ward member seats. He added that 87.5% of Congress tickets were allotted to SC, ST and BC candidates, reflecting the party’s inclusive approach.

Highlighting the party’s local body success, Mr. Goud said the Congress winning 94 municipalities was a clear indication of people’s positive response to its development and welfare agenda. In Nizamabad, he pointed out, Congress candidates defeated AIMIM nominees in five seats, against the popular belief that AIMIM and Congress were together.

Referring to the proposed 42% reservations for Backward Classes, the TPCC chief said the Congress was committed to implementing the policy with ‘complete sincerity’. He noted that party structure and welfare programmes would be key discussion points in the upcoming All India Congress Committee review meeting, which will assess the political situation across States.

Clarifying internal party matters, Mr. Goud said the selection of municipal chairpersons and councillors was based on surveys and the strength of councillors, and not on individual preferences. On mayoral choices, he said corporators had taken a pragmatic view that having a mayor would accelerate constituency development and decisions were made accordingly.
