After a hot and sunny day, Hyderabad was battered by heavy rains on Sunday evening, leading to waterlogging and traffic snarls across several parts of the city. The downpour, which coincided with the holiday, disrupted weekend plans for many residents.
According to data from Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), several areas recorded high rainfall within just a few hours. Secunderabad received the highest at 123 mm, while five other locations also crossed the 100 mm mark.

To manage the congestion, the Hyderabad Traffic Police diverted vehicles from Rethibowli towards Shaikpet nala and from Nanalnagar towards Langar Houz. Authorities also closed traffic movement from Khajaguda Junction towards Shaikpet Flyover due to heavy waterlogging.
Personnel from all three commissionerates, Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda were deployed at key junctions to regulate traffic movement. Teams from the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) were also pressed into service, working to clear waterlogged stretches.

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath speaking on the chaos caused by the rain said “Every major waterlogging point in Hyderabad, and there are about 40 of them, requires a thorough root cause analysis. We need to understand why the water is accumulating, what is obstructing the flow, and how the problem can be corrected or at least mitigated. Each location has to be studied in relation to its catchment area, meaning where all the water is draining from. We applied this approach at Maitrivanam, and to a large extent the waterlogging problem there has been addressed, though some more work is still pending,”.
