The Panangad police arrested three persons for allegedly assaulting a 45-year-old man who had tried to rescue one of the accused from what he believed to be a road accident at Nettoor.

The arrested are Umesh Peediyeckal, 43, Arjun Puthenveliyil, 29, and Shaiju Kalathiparambil, 39, all from Nettoor. The trio were allegedly under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place around 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday. According to the police, the complainant, also a resident of Nettoor, who was on his way home, found Shyju lying unconscious on the road and the others in a helpless state.

When the complainant rushed to help them and tried to administer CPR to Shyju, the others allegedly assaulted him, saying they knew how to save their friend. Shyju, meanwhile, woke up and reportedly joined his friends and assaulted the complainant. The complainant was allegedly beaten up with a helmet.

The accused fled as local residents rushed to the spot on hearing the commotion. The complainant was rushed to the Ernakulam General Hospital.

The police have registered a case.
