A head constable, attached to the Kanjikovil police station in Perundurai sub-division of Erode district, was placed under suspension after CCTV footage showing him abusing workers and damaging property at a fast-food outlet went viral on social media.

eThe constable, identified as Mohan Kumar, was on night patrol duty on Sunday (February 8, 2026) night within the Kanjikovil police station limits when he noticed a fast-food shop functioning at around 10.18 p.m. at Four Roads. Irked by the shop remaining open, he entered the premises and asked the employees, all migrant workers, to shut it down. The footage shows the constable damaging items in the shop, using abusive language, and attempting to assault the workers.

The police are authorised to enforce the law. But, they do not have the right to inflict damage on property or to harass, abuse, or assault migrant workers merely based on the State they come from.

The employees reportedly told the constable that the shop had permission to operate until 11 p.m. and requested him to take up any issues with the owner, stating that they were only employees. As they attempted to close the shop, the constable allegedly continued to hurl abuses before leaving the spot.

The entire incident was recorded by a CCTV camera with audio installed at the shop. After the footage surfaced online and triggered public outrage, demands were raised for action against the officer. Following an inquiry, Superintendent of Police A. Sujatha on Monday (February 9) issued orders placing Mohan Kumar under suspension.
